I realize that most of you probably don’t like electronic music as much as I do. Oh well. If you are waiting for posts on Brad Paisley you just aren’t going to find them here.
I didn’t know it when I downloaded Metro Area’s pop-happy “Read My Mind” a few years ago that it would lead me to Morgan Geist. Geist is a well-known New York DJ who was one-half of the group Metro Area. He and DJ/producer Darshan Jesrani met in 1996 and started working on music together. From what I can find they started releasing music in 1999.
Geist started releasing under his own name as well as continuing to release stuff for Metro Area. I was drawn to his 2008 album Double Night Time. Geist wrote it during a time he said he felt hopeless because the music industry was dying. He wanted to do something that wasn’t predictable or otherwise “disposable” pop music.
Double Night Time‘s tracks drip with synths and almost numb vocals from Junior Boy’s Jeremy Greenspan. Geist’s sound is like that quick breath you take while looking over your shoulder in a dark alley at night. It’s like knowing you are lost in the wrong neighborhood in Detroit. Or like the soundtrack to a movie about a contract killer who wears tight black leather gloves. It’s cold and dangerous yet stirring at once.
Enjoy some samples from the 2008 album. If you head out to look at the northern lights or a meteor shower this fall, I suggest you take Double Night Time with you.
“Ruthless City”
“City Of Smoke And Flame”
“The Shore” (3:10 mark is awesome)
