“Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!” Elusive, yet genius, Pilooski is a French DJ who is best known for the art of the re-edit. He takes 50s, 60s, and 70s music or otherwise crappy b-sides and modernizes them. He has a special liking for 60s music because he hears it as raw and honest.
Pilooski started work with Benjamin Diamond who had produced the “Music Sounds Better With You” record for Stardust which heavily relies on a sample from Chaka Khan’s “Fate.” (Which is a wicked track that I will highlight another time.) Pilooski then got into remixing songs that he liked after doing a lot of gigs and not liking any of the music he had to DJ with.
His most famous mix to date is probably the one for “Beggin’” which is a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons song that was used in an Adidas commercial a couple of years ago. There is an awesome video that goes with that song, but after hemming and hawing over it I decided I won’t post it here because it shows girls dancing in their bras and underwear but only for a couple of seconds it’s a little “risque.” But below is a hat trick of great Pilooski re-edits. They are a bit hard to find on itunes but they are there if you dig for them.
Pointer Sisters: “Send Him Back” Pilooski re-edit
Dee Edwards: “Can’t There Be Love” Pilooski re-edit (My Fav!)
Nina Simone: “Take Care Of Business” Pilooski re-edit
Thumbs up on this. Had no clue that “Music Sounds Better With You” was working around Chaka Khan.
I’ve got a soft spot in my musical heart for Freemasons. Anyone who can rework songs by Tina Turner and Jackie Moore is alright by me.
