The Smiths, (not the awesome Morrisey-led band from the 80s) i.e. actor/singer Will and his actress/singer wife Jada Pinkett-Smith are now promoting their daughter Willow’s singing career. 9-year-old Willow has just signed with hip-hop mogul Jay-Z on his Roc Nation label. A snippet of her new track, “Whip My Hair” has been released on the web.
Let’s slow down and recap. This kid was born in the year 2000. The 4th-grader rocks a faux-hawk that is wilder than Rhianna’s and wears leopard-print hammer pants and gold chains. She wants to emulate Billy Idol (which may explain the faux-hawk) but there is nothing on this track that sounds like “White Wedding” to me. We also have Jay-Z now publicly selling her as the “next Michael Jackson.” Usually when a kid has this much hype surrounding them so young they actually do end up like Michael Jackson later in life.
Living with chimpanzees and using Propofol to “sleep.” Or worse, like Lindsay Lohan. I’d say this is a slippery slope at best for little Willow.
But I will admit the beats are kind of sick on “Whip My Hair.” And since anything Jay-Z touches pretty much turns to solid gold you can expect that Willow Smith will likely turn into the child-friendly rap-version of Hanna Montana.
Hey, can’t knock the hustle.
